How we raise them

Our goal is good-quality beef first. Here's how we plan to get there, and what we'll be able to show you about every package.

The cows and the bulls

The cow herd is rooted in Gelbvieh, our family's breed since the 1980s, crossed with Angus. That gives moderate-size, fertile mother cows that do well on Panhandle grass.

The steers we sell as beef are planned to be sired by Angus bulls chosen for marbling, which drives flavor and juiciness. Our 2028 pilot comes from our first calves, born in 2027 to Angus-cross heifers.

Finishing, harvest and aging

  • Grain-finished for about 200 to 240 days.
  • No implants planned. "Raised without added hormones" will only go on our labels once our records support it and FSIS approves the label.
  • Harvested under 30 months of age.
  • Calm handling and a short haul to the plant.
  • Aged at the plant, planned 10 to 14 days.
  • Choice target. Our beef isn't graded yet. Only a USDA grader can grade a carcass, and we'll post the results when one does.
  • Beef Quality Assurance: certification planned.

A family breed since the 1980s

Cunningham Cattle Co. was formed in 1985. In January 1987 it held a Gelbvieh bull, female and steer sale at the ranch on Highway 26, and the family later showed at the National Western Stock Show in Denver. Read our story
